Positional audio
Please note that Mumble works with all games as a regular voice chat application. Also, the positional audio is currently broken on 1.1.x, so if you want to use it, you need to use 1.2.0 or later.
The games below are the ones we've added positional sound support for, so that the voice of your teammates come from their direction in game. This feature can be enabled as follows:
- Check "Advanced" in the Configure|Settings menu
- Go to Plugins and check "Link to Game and Transmit Position"
- In Audio Output check "Positional Audio"
- If you use a headset or headphones then check "Headphones".
Just because your game says it is a different version from the plugin does not necessarily mean that the plugin will not work.
It is possible that some plugins are outdated in the current release; in that case please check the lists below.
Please note that we won't update the plugins for Mumble 1.1.8
If your server is still running 1.1.8 we suggest that you install Mumble and Murmur 1.2.0. It contains a backwards compatible 1.1.x client that is able to use the new plugins. To update its plugins, start Mumble 1.2.0, and its auto-updater will download the latest plugins.
If there is no update for the plugin, please create a bugreport here.
For additional infos what positional audio is and how it works in mumble see --> here
If you want to add support for a game and you are able to modify the source of this game you can use the Link plugin. If you cannot modify the source of the game you want to add, this guide should help. For an overall look at retrieving positional data from a game, see here.
Supported Games
Basic support means that the games don't use the extended positional audio features of Mumble 1.2, but still allow positioning.

Manual Audio Setting | 1.0 | Yes | Yes |
Manual Positional Audio Plugin
Additional to the already mentioned Plugin there is a special Plugin that does not require a game. Instead you can configure the Plugin itself to set your own position from which other people in the same channel can hear you.
1 set yourself on the canvas from where others should hear you. Note that your audience is usually at the center of the canvas (X;Y;Z 0;0;0)
2 set your own orientation where you want your virtual avatar to look at on a 360° Scale
3 set your own azimuth (if you look up or down while you talk)
4 and 5 set the context and identity of your avatar only the people with the some context will hear you positionally.
6 Link or Unlink the plugin to Mumble so the settings are transfers to the server for processing
7 Activate or Deactivate the Plugin
8 Unhinge the settings window so it stays open even with the configuration settings Page closed therefore you can still change the positional audio settings without keeping the overall mumble settings open.
9 set standard values for all settings
10 close the page
Overlay
The overlay is a feature that will overlay the nicknames of users in the channel or users talking over your currently running game. That means you will be able to see who's listening and talking ingame.
Mumble provides overlay support for Games using Direct3D 9/10 or OpenGL on Windows and OpenGL using games on Linux/OSX.
Incompatible games
Games that are known to have major issues with the Mumble overlay:
- Combat Arms (overlay causes CA to crash after map changes; overlay will not display unless one joins a server and then leaves it)
- Supreme Commander (Multiplayer)
- Vanguard (crashes to desktop when overlay is enabled)
- Call of Duty 2, 4 (PunkBuster kick)
Games that are known to have minor issues with the Mumble overlay:
- Any of the "Dawn of War" series (overlay will not display)
- Warcraft 3 (overlay will not display)
- Killing Floor and Red Orchestra (same game engine; the game will crash when changing resolutions or going into fullscreen mode)
Disable Overlay for a particular game
If you would like to disable the overlay for a certain game (because you do not want it in that particular game, or that game has issues with the overlay), and do not want to disable the overlay altogether, put a file named nooverlay (without any extensions) in the same folder as the game executable is located. This will tell Mumble that you do not want the overlay in this particular game. Current releases of Mumble also support black-/whitelisting from the client itself (Settings->Overlay, make sure advanced is checked).
