Mumble Features and Basic Configuration
Ok. So you have Mumble installed. Now you are probably wondering what to do next. Here's a rundown of the basics of Mumble.

Wizards
When you first start Mumble, it will ask you if you want to go through the Audio Wizard and Certificate Wizard. You should. And don't just rush through it. Carefully read each step, and find out what the Wizard is asking you. Especially pay attention to the voice activation pages; you don't want everyone complaining that they can't hear you or that they hear you too much. When you back up your certificate in the Certificate Wizard, save it to a flash drive or external storage medium; do NOT save it to your hard drive!

GUI
You can permanently change the sub-sections of the Mumble window. Go to the User Interface tab in the config (Configure -> Settings -> User Interface), and select a GUI preset.

However, if you want to change it to an even more specific configuration, hover your mouse at the top of the log window, just below its edge, and wait for about a half-second. A small edge will drop down. When that happens, click and hold, and then drag the window to the bottom of the main window. You can do the same with the chat window; it's recommended that you put it below the log. You can also move your cursor to the top of the section, click the bar, and drag it up and down to set how many horizontal pixels it occupies.

After that, open up the Connect window (Server -> Connect). You can add a Favorite server by clicking "Add New...." Contact your server administrator for IP and Port. You can use whatever name you choose when you connect to the server, but whatever name you are using when you register with the server will always be used for that server, unless an admin removes it.

Once you are connected to a server, you should be able to register yourself by clicking your username, right clicking it, then selecting "Register."

Configuration
Mumble's default config has basic options, but it does not include all of them. If you want to tweak all the components of Mumble, go to Configure -> Settings and check "Advanced" at the bottom left corner of the Configuration window. If you see a step below that has Advanced Config, like that, then you need to have Advanced Config turned on.

Also remember that for reliability purposes, Mumble is made so that most Configuration settings are not applied until exit. Believe us, we have reasons for doing this. So, if you change a whole bunch of Configuration settings at one time, it is recommended that after doing so, you restart Mumble so the changes will remain permanent even if for some reason, your computer or Mumble crashes.

Mesages
Advanced Config

As previously discussed, messages can sometimes be annoying. If you want to disable other messages to the log (listed as "Console"; it's the window that shows text when something happens), or to "Notifications" (the little messages that Windows pops up at the bottom right corner of your screen), you can also select which ones to activate from Configure -> Settings -> Messages

Overlay
Advanced Config

Mumble has an Overlay that will display in Games and also in DirectX rendered video, like VLC or YouTube. This overlay is displayed at the top right of your screen when you are playing a game. You can configure it by going to Configure -> Settings and clicking the Overlay section.

If the overlay works well with your situation, you can use a 600x60 PNG image (preferably with an alpha blend for transparency reasons), in place of standard text. To use, modify, or delete a texture, go to Server -> Change Texture (use, change) or Server -> Remove Texture

If you wish to turn it off, uncheck "Enable Overlay."

Positional Audio
Advanced Config

Mumble has positional auto for certain games. This means that when enabled, the audio transmitted in Mumble will appear to emanate from your in-game avatar. This positional audio is obtained using plugin libraries in the form of DLLs.

If you have games on that list, and wish to use PA (positional audio), go to the Plugins section, check "Link to Game and Transmit Position," then go to the Audio Output section, check "Positional Audio," and then check "Heaphones" (if you are using headphones). Most people like to hear each other clearly all the time, so it is recommended that you set "Minimum Volume" to at least 90%.

Plugin Updates
Plugin updates are something that is required many times, because when a game is patched, the memory addresses used to fetch the positional data changes. This calls for a recompile of the plugin. In Mumble 1.2.0, the plugins are automatically downloaded when they are updated.

Skins
If you wish to make your Mumble look pretty, there are many available options. Here is a skins page that has links to many excellent skins; if you want to make a skin with any colors you want, use Juicer.

To install a skin:

# Go to C:\Program Files\Mumble and create a folder named skins

# Download and extract your skin. Make sure that the skin folder you have has all the image files and skin file inside of it.

# Place the skin folder inside of skins

# Go to Configure -> Settings -> User Interface, and beside the "Skin" box, select "...". A window should pop up and display the skins folder. Open that folder and then open the skin folder you place inside of it. Now select the QSS file; it should be named something similar to the skin name.

Text-To-Speech
Advanced Config

This is another feature that many people complain about, for various reasons. Trust us, it is very useful. However, you may need to configure it a bit to suit your needs. If you do want to just turn the whole thing off, simply go to Audio -> uncheck Text-To-Speech.

If you want it to not talk for a specific message, go to Configure -> Settings -> Messages. You can select which messages Text-To-Speech will output.

Whisper
Mumble 1.2.0 includes a really nice feature: the ability to whisper to a specific player or channel. You must make a shortcut to do this; go to Configure -> Settings -> Shortcuts and click "Add." A new entry will be displayed. Under the function field, double click your entry and scroll down to "Whisper." Now double click the "Data" field and then click "..."

A window will pop up where you can select what type of whisper you want: User or Channel.

If you want a user, then click the drop-down box and select a user, clicking "Add" after each one. If you check "Ignore positional audio," then whatever you transmit will be centered, regardless if you are linked to a game or not. Note that the users you want to add must currently be in the server.

"Whisper to Channel" is self-explanatory.

Registration and Permissions; Murmur
If you are a server admin, or you need to figure out how to set up channels for yourself or others, you need to read this. Read both "Becoming Administrator and Registering a User," "ACLs" and "Access Tokens."

Access Tokens
Another nice feature of Mumble 1.2.0 is Access Tokens. These are what you could call passwords; basically, if you have a token that is the same name as the channel's ACL Access Token group, you can enter the channel. Think of Access Tokens as groups where you can add yourself to the group if you know the "password" (token).

Once you find out the Access Token name, click Server -> Access Tokens, and add the token for the channel you want to enter. Note that Access Tokens operate off of a per-server basis, so your Access Token in one server will not carry over to another.

Anything Else
If you have a problem that you just simply cannot figure out, come on the [irc://irc.freenode.org/mumble Mumble IRC channel] and we will try to help you out.
